Make a list (and check it twice)
Whether you’re moving into a property for the first time, or you’re a bit of an expert, it’s handy to make a list before you start packing.
Having a checklist of things you need to do means you can clearly see what’s a priority.
It doesn’t have to be anything complicated,you can just fill it with things that will help your move as easy as possible.
Your list could include things like:
- Buy storage boxes
- Book removal van
- Order washing machine to new house
If you put it in a place you look at every day, it’ll remind you of what you need to get done. By ticking off things early, it’ll give you less to do on the big day.
Get organised with the legal bits early
Although the admin parts of a big move can be quite tedious, they’re the most important thing to get done.
- Check with your landlord to see how much notice you need to give on your current property (if you have one). It’s useful if there is a crossover between homes, so you don’t have to move everything out in one day.
- Let insurance companies, banks, the DVLA and tax companies know that you’ll be moving and therefore changing your address. Make sure you include when the change will be put in place.
- Contact your local post office and ask them to redirect your mail to your new address. Also, remember to either change your contact details or cancel any subscriptions you have to stop them from being delivered to your old address.
Get packing
It’s never too early to start getting your things together.
Start by going through each room and packing up any non-essential items first. This way you can see what you have left to organise.
With items like clothes, use this as the time to sort through what you want to keep and what you could give a new home. The best way to do this is by making piles of what you wear regularly and what’s been at the back of your wardrobe for years. If you haven’t worn something in a while, sell it online or take it to your local charity shop.
Label any boxes to make things easier when they get to your new property, as you’ll know what needs to go where. Put the contents and what room they belong to for a stress free move (and to make things easier for the removal company).
With larger items like TV’s, fridges and sofas, you can wait until the night before to unplug and package them up to keep them protected.
Don’t forget about the essentials
The first thing most people think about when moving is packing things into cardboard boxes. But it’s important to note down what you’d like to be set up when you get to your new home.
Have you been in touch with your internet provider to tell them you’ll need to set up a new box?
Do you know if the utilities will work in the house when you get there?
They may sound like simple things, but they often take a few days or weeks to fully set up, so it’s best to be prepared.
The last minute preparations
Once you’re packed up and ready, there’s a few extras that most people forget.
- Make sure you have some food together for the first day or so. You’ll be so focused on unpacking, there probably won’t be much time for a trip to the supermarket. If you have the essentials in the cupboard you can snack as you go (and feed any helpers you’ve got).
- If you’ve booked a removal service, double check times and dates with them.
- Having a plan for the day can make things run a lot smoother. Give yourself enough time to get everything together before the movers come and write down what you need to do first when you get to your new property.
The most important thing to remember is to relish the time you have to put your stamp on your new home. Enjoy the process and think of it as a ‘fresh start’ rather than a chore.
